Gipuzkoa remodels the Legazpi packaging recycling plant to triple its capacity

The new facilities will treat 2,000 tons per year of plastic bags!

The Gipuzkoa Waste Consortium will start up a new packaging recycling plant after investing 2,627,000 € in the complete renovation of the previous facilities and in the conditioning of its 1,000 m2 of surface. Thanks to the machinery equipped with the latest technologies, the production capacity will triple and will go from 1 to 3 tons per hour, which means 25,000 tons per year of plastic packaging that will be separated and prepared for their subsequent recycling.

Likewise, it will improve the quality and effectiveness of the processes, which will go from 82% to 88%, reducing losses and rejections generated by the activity.
The operation of the new plant has been awarded to the joint venture formed by the companies CESPA and Campezo, for a period of 4 years, renewable for another two years, and for a total amount of 5,764,600 €, which includes the cost of the renewal of the previous installations.

The new Legazpi plant will process the packaging collected in the Debabarrena, Debagoiena, Urola Medio, Urola Kosta, Tolosaldea and Sasieta communities. The improvement in the capacity of the facilities, which has tripled, will help to cope with the significant growth experienced by the collection of packaging. In 2017, the packaging waste collected in Gipuzkoa reached 62.81% and in 2018 it experienced a growth of 26% in the aforementioned regions.

The volume of packaging treated last year at the previous Legazpi facilities exceeded 8,000 tons. Of this amount, 2,000 tons were plastic bags that were separated and treated for their subsequent recycling, avoiding one of the main contamination problems caused by the disposal of this type of waste.

Among the main technological improvements introduced, those that stand out are the two higher-capacity by-product presses, two new optics, a new line design with recirculation and by-pass and one ferrous metals separator above the flow of ballistic fines. All this is intended to optimize the of the packaging deposited in the yellow containers, reduce rejections and have a plant that minimizes waste as much as possible.

In addition to the new machinery for the sorting and treatment of packaging, there are other improvements that will affect safety and working conditions in the plant, such as: led lighting, thermal cameras, new opening and closing doors, soundproofing and insulation, expansion of locker rooms, office remodeling and expansion of the unloading terminal.

The plant will have an environmental outreach project that will bring schoolchildren closer to the work being done at the plant to recycle the packages that are deposited in the yellow containers.

The new plant project gives continuity to the initial plant that was built due to an agreement between the Environment Department and the Commonwealth of Sasieta in 1997. Its objective was to comply with the Law 11/99 on packaging waste, and it was the first of its kind in the Basque Country.
